Lithium Chemistry of Lithium Doped Magnesium Oxide Catalysts Used in the Oxidative Coupling of Methane a

چکیده
Active sites are created on the surface of a Li/MgO catalyst used for the selective oxidation of methane by the gradual loss of carbondioxide from surface carbonate species in the presence of oxygen. Decomposition of the carbonat~ species in the absence of oxygen is detrimental to the activity of the cataIy~t. The active sites'created are not stable but disappear either as a result of reaction with S iO2~ fort 0 Li2SiQ Dr by the formation and subsequent loss of the volatile compound LiOH. hug~neral th~adAti~on of water to the gas feed is detrimental to the stability of the catalyst. In the case of Li2CO3 strongly bonded on the surface of Li/MgO catalyst, the decomposition of the carbo~te and thus the initial activity, can be enhanced by the addition of water to the gas feed. The addi~bn-of carbon dioxide to the gas feed results in a poisoning of the catalyst, the degree of this poisoning depending on the activity of the catalyst. The deactivation of the catalyst can be retarded if low concentration of carbon dioxide are added to the reaction mixture. It is possible to improve the stability of the catalyst by periodic reversal of the direction of flow of the gas steam.

Effect of Additives on Lithium Doped Magnesium Oxide Catalysts Used in the Oxidative Coupling of Methane
It has been found that it is possible to improve the activity and stability for the oxidative coupling of methane of a Li/MgO catalyst by the addition of small amounts of the oxides of various transition and rare earth metals. A number of these additives, e.g. SnOZ, TiOz, Dy,O, and Tb407, caused little or no difference in the selectivity to C, products achieved with the resultant catalyst while...
متن کاملOxidative coupling of methane over doped Li/MgO catalysts
A series of zirconia doped Li/MgO catalysts with a fixed amount of zirconia and varying concentrations of lithium was used for the oxidative coupling of methane. It was found that an increase in lithium concentration resulted in a decrease in initial activity, while the selectivity was not affected. The life-time of Zr doped Li/MgO catalysts with a fixed concentration of ZrOz is a function of t...
متن کاملAn ab Initio Study on the Oxidative Coupling of Methane over a Lithium-Doped MgO Catalyst: Surface Defects and Mechanism
We present a study on the catalytic cycle responsible for coupling of methane by molecular oxygen over a lithium-doped magnesium oxide catalyst. To elucidate the mechanism by which methyl radicals are produced and the active sites are regenerated, geometries and energies of relevant reaction intermediates were determined using an ab initio embedded cluster model. Our results suggest a new mecha...

The promoting effect of niobium in a Li/MgO catalyst for the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) and for the oxidattve dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) has been studied in some detail. it has been found that a Li/Nb/MgO catalyst with 16 wt % niobium showed the highest activity for the C, production in the OCM reaction; the activity at 600 “C was ten times that of the Li/MgO catalyst at the same...
